Towel pullups is the consensus best substitute. For more realism, alternate one hand high, one hand low on the towel. Some folks do towel pulldowns, as well. Standard rope length is 15′, and standard substitution is 15 towel pulls.
I would personally hate to suggest over 400 towel pullups to someone, which is why I’m just copy and pasting from the FAQ, this is a hero workout, which completely skews the substitution……
22:48rx. Also, after 3 months of Crossfit vs. running and lifting on my own here are my results: Weight 204lbs to 190lbs. Body fat dropped from 18% to 12%. VO2 max from 42ml/kg/min increased to 51ml/kg/min. Windgate test peak power from 1056 watts increased to 1122. Thanks to all the trainers for all your help and special thanks to Ty Graham. Nothing like this would ever have been possible without all your hard work. As for the naysayers…LESS TALK, MORE CHALK!

thrusters RX did all pullups, 10per rope climb.
I too would like to thank all the trainers and other crossfiters for the help and pushing us. There is NO WAY I could have done this on my own. Again thanks to TY for making this possible.
34:45 rx rope climb technique needs a lot of work!
to wfr….i have been hearing about all of your results and needless to say they are incredible…….truly incredible! words cannot express how proud i am of all of you….well done boys!!!
I did not do today’s WOD, but I did get my body fat tested. So pumped to see results like this!! I’m down 10% body fat! It was nice to start Crossfit with the group that started 90 days ago. I think the peer pressure was good for me.
Thanks everyone for your help and encouragement, especially Sarah, Armand, Jared and Nick R.
36:52…rx on Thrusters, but didn’t have a rope. Instead, I did 10 towel pull-ups for each rep on the climb (120, 90, 60). My hands are split wide open for the first time.
Thanks again Jared for the advice on modifying the workout.

not rx thrusters quite yet, but I’m trying hard to get there soon….
wussed out on most of the rope climbs, but suprised myself and was able to mix the pullups/climbs. 5 ropes first time, 3 in the second set, 2 in the last (had 10 pullups x10 for each missed rope). Who knew I could get this be-hind up 15 ft in the air on a dumb rope?? Hopefully have less poundage to haul up there next time!
I think 34:44 RX
I don’t remember all my stats but I am not as fat as I was, I am stronger than I was and I feel so much better than before. Thanks to everyone who helped motivate me and for all the help along the way. This is just the beginning.
