What Is CrossFit?
CrossFit In As Few Words As Possible : Constantly Varied Functional Movements done at High Intensity. Our specialty is not having a specialty. We are a broad, general, and all inclusive program that will create a state of general physical preparedness that will enable you to tackle any and all situations.
Here’s some insight from Coach on the intent of CrossFit:
“CrossFit is in large part derived from several simple observations garnered through hanging out with athletes for thirty years and willingness, if not eagerness, to experiment coupled with a total disregard for conventional wisdom. Let me share some of the more formative of these observations:
1. Gymnasts learn new sports faster than other athletes.
2. Olympic lifters can apply more useful power to more activities than other athletes.
3. Powerlifters are stronger than other athletes.
4. Sprinters can match the cardiovascular performance of endurance athletes even at extended efforts.
5. Endurance athletes are woefully lacking in total physical capacity.
6. With high carb diets you either get fat or weak.
7. Bodybuilders can’t punch, jump, run, or throw like athletes can.
8. Segmenting training efforts delivers a segmented capacity.
9. Optimizing physical capacity requires training at unsustainable intensities.
10. The world’s most successful athletes and coaches rely on exercise science the way deer hunters rely on the accordion.”
Ten Recognized Fitness Domains:
1. Endurance – The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen (cardiovascular/respiratory endurance).
2. Stamina – The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy. (capacity to maintain repetitive muscular movements)
3. Strength – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
4. Flexibility – the ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
5. Power – The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
6. Speed – The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
7. Coordination – The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a single distinct movement.
8. Agility – The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
9. Balance – The ability to control the placement of the body’s center of gravity in relation to its support base.
10. Accuracy – The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
Evidence Based Fitness
With CrossFit, we practice evidence based fitness. With all of our movements we are able to measure and calculate power output. WIth these numbers we can accurately track a persons progress. If a person can do 20 pullups in one minute, and a month later they can do 30, they have become fitter (provided they are the same height and weight). We can measure the load, distance traveled, and the time it takes, and this will give us an individuals power output.
The Body Is One Piece:
Your body is one piece, why would you train it any other way. If you’re used to training chest and tris on Monday, then back and bis on Tuesday you are in for a rude awakening. Count up the number of muscles you know, and subtract that number from 400, and thats the amount of them you’re missing out on. Your body doesnt know the difference.
